When Sushila Bharti opened the doors of her house to her students at 9 am for their regular classes, little did she expect to be greeted with a ‘green surprise’ at her doorstep. Yes, six students from eVidyaloka’s Learn from Home program landed up with saplings to mark World Environment Day at Sushila’s house!
Sushila works with Sadbhawana Gramin Vikash Sanstan (SGVS), eVidyaloka’s partner NGO in the Basti district of Uttar Pradesh. Sushila is a Class Assistant who runs eVidyaloka’s ‘Learn from Home’ program for students from P .S. Muradpur Narauli school in the Basti district. She has been mentoring and enabling students to continue their learning right through the pandemic. Six of her students did not have access to a digital device for learning, so Sushila opened up her home to these students so that they could come together and access internet and mobile devices at Sushila’s house and continue their learning. Over the last year, she has created a positive learning environment for these students at home.

On World Environment day, students brought saplings for planting to mark the occasion. They told Sushila ” jaha school hota hai wahi pe ped lagayenge. Agar school hota to school me lagate, ek sal se to yahe padhate hai, esliye yaha lagawayenge” (we want to plant trees at school. Since we have been learning here for the past year, this is school for us and we will plant trees here). Students planted the saplings and spread awareness on the issue in the neighbourhood.
It was a real surprise for her family and moment of pride for Sushila to see her students being so conscious of the environment and especially that her efforts to create a conducive learning environment at her house had paid off!
